Flies can be a so bothersome and even cause illnesses such as salmonella, Chlamydia, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, anthrax
and others. Flies get attracted to filth and bits of food left on dishes or in the kitchen. You will find the maximum number
of flies around garbage. Flies lay their eggs so that they can multiply.
Flies can be everywhere in the air, carpet, counter or cupboard. Pesticides are available for most common household insect
pests like ants, dust mites, wasps, cockroaches but these potent chemical compounds may be more harmful to humans and the
environment than the pests.
If you do not want to use an electronic fly swatter or electric bug zapper then it is advisable to use natural, non-toxic ways to control the entry of flies in your house. Here are a few household and natural ways:
- Mint is a good fly repellent. Placing small sachets of crushed mint in and around your house can help to discourage the entry of flies.
- Place a small, open container of sweet basil and clover near pet food. This should also be done around any open food in the house to avoid attracting flies.
- Safe, nontoxic, pheromone-based outdoor and indoor fly traps are available.
- You can fool flies by hanging a CD up with a string and allow it to spin around. The hanging and spinning CD looks like a big fly’s eye. This disorients the little flies and they go elsewhere.
- Wrap bay leaves, cloves and eucalyptus in small cheesecloth squares. Hang this near open windows or doors to keep flies away.
- Take a scrap of absorbent cloth. Pour a few drops of eucalyptus oil on this cloth. Place this in areas where flies are a problem. It will help to deter flies.
- A light spray of Pine Sol on affected areas will also help keeping flies away.
- You can also make your own fly paper. Mix ¼ cup syrup, 1 tbsp. granulated sugar and 1 tbsp. brown sugar in a small bowl. Soak small strips of brown kraft paper in this mixture. Let the strips dry overnight. Poke a small hole at the top of each strip and hang it with a string or thread.
- An ecological method to keep flies away is to plant marigold flowers. You can plant them in a window box or even in an old trash can that has holes at the bottom. Insects are allergic to Marigolds.
- You can also buy flytraps from the market. If you do not wish to do so, you can make your own flytrap at home. Take a mason jar and put some sugar, soda or any combination of sweet stuff that you want. Close the lid and put some holes in it. Place the flytrap in areas where flies are a problem. The flies will get attracted to this jar and get trapped in your homemade flytrap.
- There is another interesting trick that you can use to fool flies. Fill a plastic zipper bag with water till about halfway. Hang it outside your window or above your door. The light reflection of the water confuses the flies and distracts them away.
