House flies can be a major pain when they get into your house. They can bother you a lot while trying to eat. They carry many different strains of bacteria and viruses that can be transferred to people. They spoil the food that they have landed on. Flies lay their eggs every few weeks so that they can multiply to massive levels from a single food source.
If you can believe it, Antarctica is the only exception where flies are not found. There are over a hundred different families and around 120,000 described species. Flies carry and spread a variety of illnesses such as: salmonella, chlamydia, typhoid fever, dysentery, tuberculosis, anthrax, giardia, and parasitic worms, to name just a few.
There are several ways to get rid of flies:
- Cleanliness: Flies are attracted to filth. If there is nothing in your home to eat and/or lay eggs in, half your problems will be solved. Keep your kitchen and dishes clean. Take the garbage out regularly. Get rid of any bits of food and wipe up any spills. Remember not to keep any fruits or vegetables in the open and store dry foods in containers with tight fitting lids.
- Close of entry: Check that there’s no way for flies to get into your house. Carefully see to it that all your window screens are properly sealed. If you find any holes, cover them immediately with a little duct tape.
- Outdoor Sanitation: You can avoid flies by keeping your yard clear of things that attract flies. If there are fewer flies around your home, the chances of getting them inside your house will be less.
- Homemade Flytrap: This is an easier method. Take a mason jar and put some syrup, sugar, soda or any combination of sweet stuff that you can think of. Put the lid on and poke some holes in it. The holes should be just large enough for the particular flies you want to get rid of. Place the flytrap in the area with the greatest fly concentration.
- Plastic Bag Trick: This is an interesting trick. All you need to do is fill a plastic, 1 gallon zipper bag about halfway with water and hang it outside above your door. This trick works for different reasons: the light reflections from the water look like spider webs so flies avoid this area; the light reflecting off the water distracts the flies and they go to other areas.
- Commercial Fly Control Products: There are certain flies that don’t care about garbage but want your blood. For those flies that are looking for your blood, you should try using some good fly spray. Look for something that contains DEET.
- Natural fly control: Marigolds, mint and basil are all natural fly deterrents that can be planted outside to keep flies away from your home. Inside your house, you can hang pine boughs, scatter orange peel, or scatter cloves.
All the methods provided above can help you keep flies away from your house. Just a few precautions can save you from the illnesses and botheration from flies.
